The Saltwater Crocodile
may attain
a length of 7 m. Its body is adapted to
a sub-aquatic lifestyle: the rear legs
have swimming membranes, the ear-holes
and nostrils have valves, the palate at
the bottom of the mouth and in front of
the throat can be closed so that the
crocodile can breathe under water. The
species can be identified by the lack of
a large neck scale behind the head.

Before
1987 the Saltwater Crocodile
could be found at several places
in Can Gio, such as the Vam Sat
River (Compartment 15) Den Xanh
(Compartments 13, 18) but
sightings were very rare and
numbers small (1-3). No
sightings have been recorded
since 1987, however about 100
Saltwater Crocodiles are being
raised by the Can Gio Forest
Park. |
